Roto/Paint Artists

Roto and Paint Artists work closely with Compositors to help them integrate all elements of an image and live action, to create film visual effects shots. This includes creating mattes for cleanup as well as using various techniques and software to remove items such as wires, rigs and tracking markers.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyze shots for components breakdown with minimal supervision
  • Understand feedback given by supervisors
  • Create roto mattes for Compositors to use and has a comprehensive understanding of how these mattes will be used
  • Demonstrate the ability to use different techniques to remove rigs and tracking markers
  • Strong eye for color and understand grain structure and successfully de-grains scans and re-grains paint work for further use
  • Extensive understanding of 2D and 3D tracking and is able to create accurate, steady tracks
  • Reconstruct plates or part of the plates even if the elements do not exist
  • Research appropriate references and respect sequence continuity to ensure cohesive delivery
  • Use expressions within Nuke to help aid paint work
  • Understanding of the 3D environment within Nuke and is able to use geo data to project clean plates and understand how to use UV projections
  • Complete basic composites in Nuke and demonstrate compositing, keying, grading, re-timing and screen insertion skills
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn new techniques and software and to share this knowledge with other artists in the department

Essential Skills:

  • Traditional art and design skills including knowledge of composition and color
  • Previous use of Nuke
  • Prior knowledge of a Linux based operating system
  • An understanding of motion blur and how it affects mattes and patches
  • Prior use of a roto-scoping package, ideally Silhouette
  • A desire to learn new techniques and teach fellow artists
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Team-working abilities
  • The ability to take criticism and feedback
  • Good problem solving skills and the ability to work collaboratively with other artists

Desirable Skills:

  • Prior experience in a Compositor or Roto/Paint role
  • 3D Maya interface experience
  • Planar and point tracking software experience
  • A general understanding of the VFX production and compositing workflows
  • A knowledge of photography and practical lighting
  • An Arts or Science degree in a moving picture or art-related subject
