Yannix Technologies

Yannix leverages an extensive in-house research & development (R&D) team for both computer software and hardware engineering. This enables us to provide unique and sometimes custom solutions tailored to suit the specific needs of each client/project.

What Is “Rolling Shutter”? (Part One)

Yannix has been pioneering virtual camera matchmove and object tracking technologies for the past 25 years. We have developed the ability to reconstruct many different kinds of image distortion issues that occur in footage captured in movies, streaming video and advertising where VFX is added. These include the typical spherical lens distortion that a real lens will have, but the “perfect” digital camera lenses do not. But there are also image artifacts caused by rolling shutter, anamorphic lens distortion, focus changes on anamorphic lenses, or even footage where the action is happening in a mirror or on the other side of a glass window.

How To Handle “Rolling Shutter” (Part Two)

1. How much does rolling shutter really affect my shot? There are two factors that contribute to how much rolling shutter is in a shot:
1. The time difference between when the top line of the image was captured and when the bottom line was captured
2. The amount of motion in the image
Yannix did an analysis of several thousand shots from over 20 different large Hollywood movies over the past year for which we supplied our clients with rolling shutter compensation as part of our normal matchmoving.

YNX Tech: UV Unwrap

At Yannix, we are constantly upgrading and improving our proprietary matchmoving software and technology to ensure we are always providing our clients with the highest quality tracks. It is imperative to make sure that the matchmove sticks well via a robust and easy to use QC process.

An important tool for matchmoving QC is the UVunwrap Render, where the shot is projected onto the geometry. This projection is then rendered in geometry UV space.
